Sengoku Rance Steam Version vs the 2006 Original
Almost nothing about how Sengoku Rance plays changed between the 2006 original and the official Steam build released on October 1, 2026 — nearly everything about what things are called did. A Foot Soldier is an Ashigaru, a House is a Clan, Battle Rating is Advantage. One thing changed in substance: the Steam build presents itself as non-explicit and one endgame objective was rewritten, so old chapters about filling the diary are dead text.
These mappings come from the community AliceSoft Wiki page on MangaGamer versus fan translation differences, compiled against the 2019 MangaGamer release. The Steam build reuses that wording, and the store copy proves it: the official short description calls the setting "the eastern nation of Nippon", not the "JAPAN" every fan-patch guide uses.

The renames that actually break old guides

These are what makes a returning player think "that is not a thing in my game".
| Old guide says | Steam build says | Where it hits |
|---|---|---|
| JAPAN | Nippon | The map's own name |
| Oda House | Oda Clan | Every faction |
| Dark Lord / Demon King | Fiend / Archfiend | The two late bosses |
| Warrior | Samurai | The class you start with |
| Foot Soldier | Ashigaru | The guard wall |
| Monk / Diviner / Healer | Sohei / Onmyouji / Miko | Three troop classes |
| Battle Rating | Advantage | The combat readout |
| Action point | Move | Your per-turn budget |
| Free For All | National Mode | The post-game mode |
The fan patch kept family-name-first ordering, so one character is "Uesugi Kenshin" in a 2010-era guide and "Kenshin Uesugi" now.
Territory and factions: a House is a Clan now
Faction labels moved wholesale: Tenshi Sect became Tenshiism, the Dokuganryuu House became the Dokuganryu Clan, the Miko Institute became the Miko Union, and Ogre became Oni — the currency is now Oni Bone.
| Old name | Steam build name |
|---|---|
| Mansion | Troop Estate |
| Shopping district | Takauchi Shop |
| Hospital | Field Hospital |
| Control center | Management Center |
| Barrier | Invasion-Obstructing Facility |
Troop classes and the skills attached to them
Seven class names moved, and the skills referencing them moved too. A guide telling you to bring a Foot Soldier for "Lancer Legion 2" means an Ashigaru — see our unit types page.
| Fan patch | Steam build | Fan patch skill | Steam build skill |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Samurai | Charge | Store Power |
| Warrior | Samurai | Light Attack | Mercy Charge |
| Foot Soldier | Ashigaru | Ally Guard+ | Neo Ally Guard |
| Monk | Sohei | Tenshi's Divine Protection | Tenshi's Blessing |
| Diviner | Onmyouji | Guard shikigami | Defense Shikigami |
| Healer | Miko | Healing Mist | Healing Fog |
| Tactician | Tactician | Battle Strategy A / B / C | Battle Tactics III / II / I |
| Archer | Archer | Yamato Sweeping Fire | Yamato Arrow Barrage |
Two mappings catch people out: the Tactician's tier letters run backwards — the fan patch's "Battle Strategy C" is "Battle Tactics I" — and the passives changed register, so Twin Action King is Twin Action Lord and Asset Tech is Money Management.
Provinces, province battles and dungeons
Province names were localised in the official translation, breaking any pre-2019 guide that says "attack Red Helmet".
| Province | Old name | Province battle | Old name |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chuu-earth | Mid Earth | Pork Hunt | Botan Hunt |
| Redhelm | Red Helmet | Ape Hunt | Monkey Hunt |
| Shikokalamity | Death Country | Find and Slay Oni | Search for and Defeat Ogres |
| Viper Oil Field | Mamushi Oil Field | Sunfish Hunt | Headfish Hunt |
Dungeons moved too, and they are how old guides name the character to bring: SM Dungeon is S&M Dungeon, Shell Tomb is Shell Heap, Road to Hades is Yomotsu Hirasaka, Orochi's Cave is Orochi's Pit. The full renamed roster is on our dungeons page.
Items renamed on the same schedule, and shop lists are keyed to the new names: Battle Permit (footsoldier) is Operation Permit (Ashigaru), Guts Armor is Gutsy Armor. Colours and prices did not change, which is what the items reference is built on.
Which build is your old guide describing?
Version numbering tells you what a guide was written against. This lineage comes from the community's version-history page, written during the MangaGamer era.
| Build | What it is |
|---|---|
| Japanese 1.01 | First public patch for the 2006-12-15 release: bug fixes plus 28 extra conversation events |
| Japanese 1.03 | The patch that changed the game — added All-Nation Mode (now National Mode), the Kill Monkey route, Shizuka and Gekko, and a better capture rate on Light Attack |
| Japanese 1.04 | Cumulative 1.01 plus 1.03. Old saves carry over. MangaGamer launched on this base and kept the numbering |
| MangaGamer 1.05 | Fixed the mouse-stuck freeze when dragging a commander, the Game Over error, a missing battle fade-out |
| MangaGamer 1.06 | Never publicly released |
| MangaGamer 1.07 | Typo pass, SuperXBR upscaling filter, SACT engine updated to Beat Blades Haruka to stop music crashes |
| Steam, October 1, 2026 | Official English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese in one package |
A guide mentioning All-Nation Mode is 1.03 or later; one telling you to toggle noise reduction is 1.07 or earlier.
Old save files will not load
Your 2006 or fan-patch save cannot be dropped into the Steam build. Both use AliceSoft's System 4.0 engine and the same Rance7_Sys.ASD file, but the game identifier changed: legacy builds key saves to KEY_CODE_ plus the Japanese title in Shift-JIS, the Steam build to KEY_CODE_Rance in ASCII. System 4.0 stores absolute offsets for five data regions in the save header, so the shorter key shifts every pointer, the engine rejects the file, and players report the save folder getting wiped.
A third-party save converter decrypts the file (MT19937 plus zlib), patches the key and rebuilds the offset table. Treat it as community tooling, and note its README prints the wrong AppID — this game is 3867170.
What changed in the Steam build's content rating
Steam's own app metadata returns required_age = 0 with three content descriptors — Sexual Content, Violent Content and General Mature Content — and this store note verbatim: "Sengoku Rance contains mature content, including strong language, violence, blood, use of alcohol, and non-explicit sexual content." The 2006 original was an 18+ Japanese release; the Steam package presents itself as non-explicit.
The community's Steam build comparison page, written after launch and still flagged as unfinished, records what that meant mechanically: the build keeps 24 of the original 104 story illustrations and renumbers them, and one 10-point objective was rewritten. The diary item is retitled, and the goal the original counted with an adult act is now a count of kisses. Read that as a scoring change; the endings page tracks what is worth points now.
That page does not say which appid it describes, so treat the illustration count as a community reading, not a change log. Automaton West reported on September 24, 2026 only that Kagura Games "generally offers off-platform patches" for its catalogue, without naming this title. Steam's news feed for the app returned zero items on October 4, 2026.
What did not change
The systems your old guide taught are the ones the Steam build runs: same engine, same conquest map, same five-gourd route structure, same score economy. Players reviewing the release describe it as the same game with different translation and art, and none reports a rule change. No community stat table has been re-verified against this build, so read those numbers as a model, not a Steam spec.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Steam version of Sengoku Rance censored? The store page describes the content as non-explicit sexual content, and the package is not age-gated as an adult title. One 10-point objective was also rewritten.
Can I use my old Sengoku Rance save on Steam? Not directly — the save key differs between legacy builds and the Steam build, so the engine rejects legacy files. Saves from MangaGamer's digital release are the exception.
Why does my guide say Foot Soldier and my game says Ashigaru? Same unit. The official translation replaced the 2009 fan patch's class names wholesale.
