Rance Series Play Order: Start With Sengoku Rance?

Sengoku Rance is Rance 7 and it skips lore. Two camps of veteran players disagree on starting here; here is the case for each.

Rance Series Play Order: Start With Sengoku Rance?

Sengoku Rance is Rance VII — the seventh numbered entry in a series Wikipedia counts as ten main titles running 1989 to 2018 — and as of 2026-10-04 the only one you can buy on Steam. Start here if you want the strategy: the campaign is a closed arc on an island away from the Rance 01 to 03 Continent storyline, needing no progress from another entry. Start with Rance 01 + 02 if you want the series: Rance and Sill arrive mid-series with no in-game introduction, and the remade first two entries are the only place that background gets explained. Both positions are held by real people on the game's own Steam review page.

Where Sengoku Rance sits in the series

Wikipedia's Rance (series) article gives the shape: ten main titles, several spin-offs, two short side stories (Rance 4.1 and 4.2) and a spin-off compilation (Brutal King Rance), plus a separate line of remakes for the first three games.

Wikipedia's release-order list (abridged) Year Note
Rance: Quest for Hikari 1989 Superseded by the Rance 01 remake
Rance II: The Rebellious Maidens 1990 Set in Custom, a Free City on the Continent
Rance III: The Fall of Leazas 1991 Set in the Kingdom of Leazas
Rance IV: Legacy of the Sect 1992 Main entry
Rance 5D: The Lonely Girl 2002 MangaGamer localized 5D and VI in 2016
Rance VI: Collapse of Zeth 2004 Same 2016 localization
Sengoku Rance 2006 Also known as Rance VII; the 2026 Steam release
Rance Quest 2011 Rance VIII; directly follows Sengoku Rance
Rance 01 / 02 / 03 remakes 2013 01 supersedes the original in canon
Rance IX: The Helmanian Revolution 2014 MangaGamer English 2023
Rance X: Showdown 2018 Listed as the conclusion of the series

Read "ten" as the article's own count: its list mixes main entries, side stories and remakes, and the page carries maintenance templates. The sentence that decides the argument is in that same article: every game takes place in the same world and events carry over into later entries, "despite that, most of the games' stories are self-contained."

The case for starting with Sengoku Rance

The strongest version of this case is geographic. Sengoku Rance happens on Nippon, an island archipelago east of the Continent where 01 to 03 are set. You are not walking into an unfinished continent plot; you are entering a war with its own start, escalation and ending.

A Steam reviewer whose vote ranked 20th most helpful that week wrote: "Story is... story is weak for a Rance game but if this is the first one you ever play that's okay, the bar is on the floor." The reviewer who names the cost most honestly still lands on play it:

"this is the seventh main line game, so don't be surprised if some things dont make sense bc they arent explained in this game. But the game still can hold its weight on it's own, so play it!!!!" — English Steam review, 1 helpful vote (feed read 2026-10-04)

Wikipedia agrees: Sengoku Rance is one of the most common entry points into the series, and was for many players long before it had an official English release.

The mechanical argument is stronger. Everything the campaign unlocks, it unlocks inside itself: Action Fans and Satisfaction thresholds, national power, dungeon clears, and a whole new game plus layer earned without touching another game. If the genre hook is still open, the genre breakdown settles it; once you commit, the first ten turns matter more, since the game ships without a tutorial.

The case for starting with Rance 01 + 02

The most-upvoted play-order comment on the English review feed takes the opposite position:

"please for the love of god do not start with this one and either wait for 01+02's steam release or get them from JAST/Mangagamer. This is Rance 7. Otherwise, [censored laughter]." — 17 helpful votes, English Steam review (feed read 2026-10-04)

Seven votes below it, a self-described longtime fan makes the chronological case: "if you're intending on fully experiencing the series, start from the beginning with 01. You will appreciate Sengoku better after seeing everything in proper chronological order."

That case is stronger than it looks, for one reason: canon. Wikipedia records that Rance 01: Quest for Hikari, released for Windows in 2013, supersedes the original game in canon. The remake is what later entries are written against, and it explains who Rance is, why he travels alone with Sill, and why certain Continent characters react to him as they do.

Remake order is not release order

Going the story route means starting with the 2013 remake, not the 1989 original. 2006-era fan-patch walkthroughs assume pre-remake canon and old terminology, so read the Steam version differences guide first.

What you can actually play in English on Steam today

This is what the announcement coverage does not tell you. A Steam store search for "rance" (US store, English, read 2026-10-04) returned exactly five titles, only one purchasable:

Steam title App ID Store release field as read 2026-10-04
Sengoku Rance 3867170 Oct 1, 2026 — on sale
Rance 01 + 02 3867130 Coming soon (no date)
Rance 03 3867190 Coming soon (no date)
Rance IX 3867180 Coming soon (no date)
Rance Quest Magnum 3867160 Q2 2027

Rance IV and Rance X were named in roadmap coverage but had no public Steam page. The roadmap is announced-without-dates: AUTOMATON's September 2026 piece lists ports of "Rance 01 + 02, Rance 03, Rance IV, Rance IX, Rance X, and Rance Quest Magnum ... slated to arrive at later dates", and Notebookcheck's launch-day piece says "none yet dated". Only Rance Quest Magnum carries a window now, on its own store page — check the app page yourself before planning around one.

For the story route now, Wikipedia records the non-Steam answer: MangaGamer released the Rance 01 remake in English in 2020, bundled with Rance 02, and Rance 03 followed in English in March 2025.

The play order matrix

If you are... Start with Why
Here for the strategy, plot continuity is not the point Sengoku Rance Closed arc, self-contained systems, the only entry purchasable on Steam
Reading the series properly and will not stop at one game Rance 01 + 02 remakes The 2013 remake supersedes the original in canon
Wanting both, unwilling to wait on Steam Rance 01 + 02 from MangaGamer Licensed English release recorded in 2020
Starting with Sengoku and planning to continue Sengoku Rance, then Rance Quest Rance Quest (VIII) follows Sengoku Rance directly

What starting here costs you

What you give up is characterisation, not mechanics. Rance and Sill are already travelling together when the game opens; the community-maintained Story wiki begins with them mid-trip and never pauses for an origin, and the wiki as a whole documents the 2006 v1.04 and MangaGamer 2019 builds, not the Steam one. Jokes and relationship payoffs that assume the Continent storyline land as references instead.

What you keep decides whether you enjoy the game. The conquest order, the four winnable routes and the gourd clock all sit inside this campaign — see routes and clan order and endings.

The cheap middle path

Buy Sengoku Rance now and play it blind. If you then want the back catalogue, Rance 01 + 02 remakes are still where to start reading.

FAQ

Is Sengoku Rance really the seventh game? Yes — the Steam interface prints "Rance VII" in the corner of the battle screen, and Wikipedia and the launch coverage agree.

Do I need to finish Rance 01 to 02 first to understand it? No. You lose characterisation and callbacks, not plot resolution for this arc, unlocks, or mechanical context.

Is there an earlier Rance game on Steam I could buy instead? Not yet — only Sengoku Rance was purchasable on 2026-10-04, as the table above shows.
